British medical group commits to healthcare in Nigeria

A group, Medical Association of Nigerians Across Great Britain (MANSAG) have reiterated their desire to partner government and other stakeholders in order to improve the quality of healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

The President of the group, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecological Surgion Hull York Medical School Ibrahim Bolaji, stated this at a media parley in Abuja.

“The group represents interests of over 5000 physicians, nurses, radiographers, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals of

Nigerian origin in the United Kingdom and our mission among others is to use our expertise in different areas of medicine to impact on the quality of health service delivery in our country Nigeria,” he said.

Bolaji said their specialties were not specific but dependent on areas of needs identified by the federal ministry of health in collaboration with Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) and other stakeholders.

“There are gaps in our level of expertise in different areas. We are not coming here to train our colleagues because they are also professionals; we are coming here to work in partnership with them so that we can bring our expertise in different areas.

“Three areas have been identified currently by the government and they include oncology; which is all about cancer, cardiology; which is all about the heart and nephrology which is about kidneys.

“These have been identified as the major problems by the federal ministry of health. The expertise we are bringing will be in clinical, technical and non-technical areas. It is going to be exchange of skills so that when we leave, some of our colleagues can then pick up from where we leave,” he said.

Also speaking, secretary of the group Dr. Chris Agbo said one of the areas of interest of the group is medical missions.

He said, “Over the last three to five years, we have had different medical missions in the country. We were at Abeokuta, plateau state, Enugu state, Kano and Abuja.

“What we do is to send our expertise to those areas, deliver some services to the people around those areas and train some of the medical personnel there.”
