Buhari commissions N1.24bn worth surveillance system in Kaduna

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday commissioned Command and Control Centre of the Kaduna State Surveillance and Monitoring System.

He said security challenges in Nigeria required cooperation between state and federal governments.

At the ceremony, the President commended Governor Nasir el-Rufai government’s decision for infusing technology into the security architecture.

Buhari then lauded the vision and determination of the APC administration in the state, noting that Kaduna state was the first to embark on such laudable investment.

According to Mr President, the aerial  surveillance and monitoring system included a combination of fixed wind drones and higher resolution cameras that were put in several locations across the state.

President Buhari advised the management of the surveillance system to work closely with the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Ministry of Defence to safeguard civilians and military air traffic.

Buhari also expressed delight over the support and corporation the state government accords security agencies that were deployed especially with regards to the provision of land for the construction of Kafanchan operational base of the Nigerian Army.

Kaduna state governor, in his address, said the aerial monitoring system included an Emergency Situation Notification System designed to enable residents of the state to report security incidents to a toll-free number, after which the drones can then be deployed within minutes for appropriate monitoring.

He said government was awaiting approval from the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) to deploy the special toll free number as emergency number, adding that his believe in technology which could enhance the hard work of the security agencies, led to the investment in modern technology.

The Governor explained that the drones have night time capability and that they were equipped with formal cameras and are proceeded with the security mapping of the entire state.

He called on the President to support the State in securing the final approval of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority for the full deployment of the system that has been operated on a pilot basis.
