Buhari condemns El-Rufai’s arrest

The All Progressives Congress (APC) will secure and manage the country if voted into office in 2015, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the defunct CPC, has promised.
Buhari made this known in an address to the nation through Kadun-based Liberty Radio, an FM station, yesterday ahead of the APC registration exercise which commences tomorrow throughout the country.
The former presidential candidate, who noted that there was both material and physical insecurity facing the nation, also said the “All Progressive Congress is about to wipe all, God willing.”
The former Head of State decried the double standards of security agents, just as he criticised the recent arrest of the deputy National Secretary of APC, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, by the State Security Service (SSS).
He said: “The government cannot deny citizens the right to express their opinions, or you allow some people to literally threaten the corporate existence of this country and instead of being invited and asked to explain themselves; they are given a ride in presidential jets. And (when) others do it, you go and lock them or harass them. This is not how things are done.”
Buhari recalled that when APC delegation visited some governors that were having problems with PDP, the children of one of the governors were harassed and detained, adding that only God knows what statements they made in order to secure their freedom.
Buhari also said although he believes in multi-party democracy since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, he also said “elections have to be free and fair.”
The former presidential candidate who said he had gone to court three times to challenge elections in 2003, 2007 and 2011, noted that he wanted democracy to be entrenched in the country.
According to him, leaders can come and go but the system should be well grounded to provide security and prosperity for Nigerians and “this is our objective.”
