Buhari inaugurates North East Development Commission governing board

President Muhammadu Buhari Wednesday inaugurated the governing board of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) chaired by retired Major General Paul Tarfa.

The board was inaugurated at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa shortly before the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja.

Members of the board are Mohammed Alkali, Managing Director; Musa Yashi, Executive Director Humanitarian Affairs; Muhammed Jawa, Executive Director Administration and Finance and Omar Mohammed, Executive Director Operations; David Kente, representing North East; Asmau Mohammed, representing North West; Benjamin Adanyi, representing North Central; Olawale Oshun, representing South West; T. Ekechi, representing South East; and Obasuke McDonald, representing South-South.

Speaking during the inauguration, the president said the commission was established in fulfilment of the pledge of the present administration to fast track the development of the region badly damaged as a result of the activities of Boko Haram insurgents.

The president said the establishment of the commission was also in appreciation of the massive electoral support he got from the zone in the 2015 and 2019 general elections.

He said N10 billion was provided in the 2019 budget by the federal government for the successful take-off of the commission.

He stressed the need for members of the commission to make judicious use of the take-off funds, and conduct a comprehensive survey to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the insurgents in the states in the region.
