Buhari pledges improvement in teachers’ welfare


President Muhammadu Buhari has pledged the commitment of his administration to the advancement of education in the country.


The President said the federal government would not relent in its efforts to scale up resources for the growth of education in the interest of the nation’s future generations.
Buhari spoke at this year’s World Teachers’ Day celebration over the weekend in Abuja.


Speaking on the theme of this year’s celebration, “Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession,” the president underscored the continuous role of the teacher in imparting knowledge for human capital development of Nigeria.
Represented by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), Buhari asserted that education remained the only propeller to the realisation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).


Earlier, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, said the federal government’s ministerial strategic plan for the revitalisation of the education sector was predicated on 10 pillars of: “Out of school children; youth and adult literacy; Science, technology, engineering and Mathematics as well as teacher education, capacity building and professional development, among others.


Also speaking, the National President, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Dr. Muhammed Idris, commended the federal government for keeping faith the October 5 global event.


The NUT President lauded Buhari’s efforts in sustaining the annual President’s Teacher and Schools Excellence Award, which he said “has inspired a sense of belonging, hope and dignity amongst teachers in Nigeria.”
