The federal government has appointed HRM, Ewuare II, Oba of Benin, as the chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

Blueprint gathered that the institution had been without a chancellor for two years.

The vice-chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, disclosed this when he led the management staff of the institution on a courtesy visit to the Oba on Friday in Benin City, Edo state.

Prof. Peters also presented some literature of the university to the monarch and gave the assurance that the fortunes of the university would improve tremendously with the new feat.

“The reason this university was established by the federal government is to bring university education to as many Nigerians wherever they are and whatever their circumstances or social hindrances may be.

“And we are in every state of this country, serving every area. We have over 120, 000 students. It is the biggest university in Nigeria,” he said.

On his part, Oba Ewuare II said he accepted his appointment and commended President Muhammadu Buhari for finding him worthy for the position.

He promised to bring his wealth of experience to bear in the discharge of his duties and to leverage on his experience during his diplomatic sojourn towards improving teaching and learning in the university.

“When I was first informed about my appointment, I was very happy.

We thank God Almighty for this recognition of the work we have been doing in Benin Kingdom,” he said.
