Building collapse: VC tasks engineers on ‘durable’ structures

The Vice Chancellor, University of Jos, Professor Sabastian Maimako, has urged building engineers to do their best to ensure that durable structures are erected to reduce the incessant cases of building collapse in the country.

Maimako made the call recently in Jos at the induction of 25 graduates of the university by the Nigeria Institute of Builders.

The vice chancellor, who was represented by the Dean, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Professor Daniel Davou, said cases of building collapse were becoming rampant in Nigeria.

“With the incessant cases of building collapse being reported every now and then, you are expected to bring your professional skills to bear. Work hard to help avoid the unfortunate experiences of building collapse in our cities and towns,” he said.

He said the standard and credibility of the inductees  was not in doubt as the programme was fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Nduka, who was represented by the vice chancellor, Plateau state University, Bokkos, Professor Yohanna Izam, called for stiffer penalties against quacks who erected substandard structures in the country.

He also called for the enforcement and review of laws guiding urbanisation in the country.

Registrar Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) Professor Kabiru Bala said CORBON was working hard to get rid of quacks in the building profession in the country.
