C/Wealth Games: Yakubu crashes out in Weightlifting, Agboegbulem sails through

Nigeria’s poor outing in the weightlifting event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, continued on Friday following Fatima Yakubu’s disappointing finish.

Competing in the women’s 53kg category, Yakubu got a verdict of “did not finish” and was not ranked among the 14 contestants in the final standings.

India’s Sanita Chanu Khumukcham won the gold medal with a lift of 192kg.
Papua New Guinea’s Loa Dika Toua won the silver medal after a lift of 182kg, while the bronze went to Rachel Leblanc-Bazinet of Canada who did 181kg.

In the opening day of events on Thursday, Favour Agboro and Monica Uweh failed to make a podium finish in the men and women weightlifting events.

In the male event, Nigeria’s Milicent Agboegbulem produced a dominant display as she saw off Tonga’s Salote Huni in a round of 16 bout in the women’s middleweight boxing category (75kg) at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on Friday.

It was an inspiring win for both the Nigerian men and women boxing teams following the ousters of Adeola Soyoye (men’s lightweight) and Osita Umeh (women’s welterweight) on Thursday.

Fighting in the red corner, Agboegbulem secured an impressive 5-0 decision after dominating all three rounds.
She took round one with a score of 10-8, 10-9, 10-9, 10-9, 10-9.

The second round saw Agboegbulem dominate proceedings 10-9, 10-9, 10-9, 10-8, 10-9.

And in the final round, she got a score of 10-8, 10-9, 10-9, 10-9, 10-9.
