Call Akwa Ibom YPP guber candidate Akpan to order, group tells INEC

A group under the aegis of Liberated People for Transparency and Good Representation Forum has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to call the Akwa Ibom state governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Senator Bassey Akpan to order over what it described as provocative and abusive comments in his campaign.

This was contained in a statement issued by the group’s president, Comrade Enefiok Umoh, and secretary, Edet Afia Keke and made available to newsmen in Uyo, Tuesday.

The group noted that the consistent use of abusive language, insinuations, and outright disregard to  the rule of law by the governorship candidate of the YPP is becoming very unbearable as such action contravenes the Electoral Act 2022, and capable of fanning the embers of violence in the state.

“The governor of the state, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has sacrificed so much to ensure that peace is sustained in the state for harmonious living, progress, and development and we will not fold our hands and watch one man incite the people to go back to Egypt through unguided utterances during campaigns,” the statement said.

Bassey Albert Akpan at a campaign tour towards 1,2,6,7 and East Itam 1,2,3 in Itu local government area, was quoted as saying that he was offered a sumptuous amount of money by Gov. Udom Emmanuel as a bribe to step down for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Pst. Umo Eno and return to the Senate, hence his exit from the party.

“OBA has failed to state when and where the offer was made, names of witnesses to such a deal or record of the meeting.”
