Kano state Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has called on students to embrace the culture of reading academic books in order to enhance their desire for excellence in the field.
Declaring open, the maiden conference of the Nigerian Library Association Kano State Chapter held at the Murtala Mohammed Library in Kano yesterday, Ganduje said there was the need for students to rise to the challenge of modern academic pursuit, adding that with addiction to books shelves, they were poised to make considerable headway.
He said at the time he assumed the mantle of leadership, the condition of libraries in the state was appalling and that his administration had taken the pain to renovate and equip 17 libraries in the state for students to read and conduct extensive research.
According to him, no academic progress can be made with libraries relegated to the background.
He said the maiden conference was aptly conceived to give a human face to students willing to earn a niche in the competitive academic age, stressing that his administration had accorded top priority to the education sector for greater results.
Speaking earlier, the state chairman of the Nigerian Library Association, Malam Danladi Bala, said the Conference was meant to be a local one, “but it turned out to be a national one and to some extent international as papers were received for review and presentation from Kenya.”
He said the advent of Information and Communication Technology had brought about challenges and its effects on information delivery stressing that Information was the life wire of development at every stage.
