Capital punishment law on Qur’an desecration coming – Matawalle

Zamfara state Governor Bello Mohammed has said the executive in partnership with legislature will soon enact capital punishment laws against anyone found desecrating and molesting the Holy Qur’an in the state.

The governor made this known Tuesday while receiving a report of the Committee on the Review of Activities of the State Ministry of Religious Affairs, Religious Commissions and Committees under the leadership of the former state deputy governor, Mallam Ibrahim Wakkala Muhammad at the governor’s office mini chamber, Gusau.

A press release issued to newsmen by the director-general, press affairs to the office of governor, Yusuf Idris Gusau, and made available to Blueprint Tuesday said Governor Matawalle expressed dismay with the way some people perpetrated the unholy act of desecrating the Holy Qur’an in the state.

“It can only bring an end to the unholy act by enacting capital punishment laws in the state that will deal with all related offences; and Shari’a court judges will also be under careful watch in the way and manner they handle such cases as serious punitive measures will be applied on any erring judge for the purpose of discipline as no amount of punishment will be too much on such judges or the offenders,” the statement said.

The governor also appealed  to Islamic scholars in the state to sensitise people  on the importance of peace, unity and love for one another for the purpose of a purified society that is free of all crimes as he reminded the people of the importance of repenting from their sins.

Chairman of the committee, Mallam Ibrahim Wakkala, called for the renaming of the state Ulama Consultative Council (UCC) to Zamfara State Fatwah Council with a chairman that will be called Mufti of the state.
