Caramelo Club: Demolition, violation of court order, lawyer insists

Lawyer to the owner of the demolished Caramelo Night Club in Utako Abuja, Benneth Nnaemeka Eke, has described the demolition of the club as a violation of the court order.

Eke, who spoke in an interview with Blueprint in Abuja Friday, said the owner of the club had earlier approached the court and secured  an order restraining the Federal Capital Development Authority  (FCDA), Minister of FCT and Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) from demolishing the club; stopping or harassing the owners or the people accessing that club.

He claimed that the court order was actually served on them, alleging that despite the order, the officials of the FCDA continued to threaten and embarrass his client.

Eke said: “Sometimes last year, they served a notice on Caramelo Night Club, Utako, threatening demolition and we went to court to stop them.

“Luckily, court gave an order stopping them from carrying out the exercise and as it were now, the court order was not obeyed.

“Before the demolition last month, the police went there, disrupted a birthday celebration and arrested the people calling them strippers. The following day, we obtained their release, that same day, I think on the 18th of April, they came and demolished the fence, I then wrote to the minister citing the fact that their action was against the law.

“Now, they have come to demolish the whole building. Is that not rascality? What do you call that? In Nigeria, where we have law, it is very embarrassing. As I speak, we have started another proceeding against the minister for violating a court order. I believe we will get justice at the end’’.
