Cattle-filled trailer crushes 8 people in Kwara

Eight people and an unspecified number of cattle were reportedly killed after a trailer rammed into a stationary vehicle in Kwara state.

The white coloured commercial trailer with registration no DAT SGM396ZR was said to be coming from the northern part of the country when he rammed into a stationary trailer.

The incident, it was gathered, occurred in Okoolowo junction, Ilorin south local government area of Kwara state on Wednesday around past 6:00am.

According to a resident, Salaudeen Abiola, the driver of trailer that was filled with cattle rammed into another trailer that was parked along the road.

He said a male victim believed to be the owner of the animals who sat with the driver in the front died on the spot.

“The other victims include people inside the stationary trailer and other traders and marketers around the place during the incident. It was a gory sight to behold,” he said.

Another eyewitness gave the casualty figures as 12, comprising 10 Hausas and two Yorubas who were among the ram sellers in the area.

He said corpses of the deceased had been taken to the morgue of the General Hospital, Ilorin.

When contacted, the Kwara state Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Commander, Frederick Ogidan, confirmed the incident.

According to him, “17 people were involved in the accident, but 8 died while 4 were injured.”
