CBN keeps mute as banks resume paying old N500, N1000 notes

Nigerian commercial banks across the country have resumed giving out the old N500 and N1,000 notes to customers, following Supreme Court judgement on extention of old naira notes till December 31, 2023.

Confirming the news, Blueprint correspondent spoke to a banker who works with the Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB) on Monday.

According to the banker, “The old 500 and 1000 naira notes issuance was from the management directive, uptil now no directive has been issued from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).”

Neither President Muhammadu Buhari, nor CBN management had spoken on the apex court directive.

Before the judgement, the federal government and the CBN had refused to obey Supreme court injunction which ordered that the status quo of using old naira notes should remain due to scarcity of new naira notes.

Few weeks after, President Buhari gave expression instruction to CBN to release only old N200 which would be issued alongside all new naira notes.
