CFN picks, camps 10 ahead World Junior tourney in Germany

Bolstered by the superlative outing of Team Nigeria cyclists at the just concluded Africa Cup Track Championship, the Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN) has invited 10 athletes to camp in Abuja in preparation for World Junior Track Cycling Championship holding later this August in Frankfurt, Germany.

The team of four male and four female riders is led by world number five female junior cyclist Mary Samuel.

Other female athletes that made the cut include Tawakalt Yekeem, Grace Ayuba and Happiness Ernest.

The male is led by Temple Okeiya Bethel. Shedrack Igubor, Vitalis Bethel and Timileyin Johnson are part of the invitees.

All invited riders shared the massive 21 gold , 18 and 19 bronze haul at the Africa cup track championship held inside MKO Abiola national stadium, Abuja.

The eight riders will be guided by two officials – Coaches Emmanuel Onasanya and Joy Omeboh.

Meanwhile, the Cycling federation has made a passionate appeal to public spiriited individuals and corporate Nigeria to support the team as they showcase their talents at the global stage.

President of the federation, Giadomenico Massari, who made the appeal said the Track Cycling is one discipline of the sport that the country has great potential to hit the podium in a short spell if adequately supported.

The federation which bore the heavy burden of staging the Africa Cup without any support from government, said it can’t fund the entire responsibility for the for the international championship which is crucial to qualifying for 2020 Olympics.

Track Cycling is not listed for the upcoming African Games .
