Christmas light decoration electrocutes man, 35 in Asaba

Delta state government’s Christmas decoration light mounted along the popular Nnebisi road Asaba, the state capital has electrocuted a yet to be identified 35-year-old man on Monday evening.

The victim, popularly known as Jaja was said to have been engaged by the contractor of the Asaba Capital Territory Development Agency on beautification exercise to dismantle the decoration trees when he was electrocuted and died on the spot.

Eyewitness and fellow worker said that the victim was disconnecting the Christmas light when one of the cables of the street light poles fell and killed him.

According to the eyewitness, “Jaja climbed the street pole with an iron fabricated ladder to disconnect the street light from the pole. One of the wires suddenly fell and touched the ladder he was standing on, and got him electrocuted.”

The street lights were initially powered by generating set during the former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan administration but was disconnected in 2015 by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and connected to the national grid.

The source who lamented that the disconnection crew could not rescue him as victim died on the spot, said the body had since been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said the case had not been reported to any of the police divisions in Asaba.
