Church burnt, school damaged in Funtua crisis

Crisis at a private school, Ideal International School located in Tudun Wada quarters in Funtua, Katsina state, yesterday led to the burning of one church and the school building partially damaged after a mob attack over alleged blasphemy by one of the teachers.
The state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Muhammed Hurdi, who confirmed the incident on phone, said the church burnt during the crisis was a Catholic Church and a classroom in the school that was destroyed.

Blueprint gathered that the crisis started since Friday last week when some students of the school raised an alarm during an examination period that an English Language teacher had set a question alleged to be offensive to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and His mother.
Our correspondent learnt that the situation worsened yesterday morning when a mob mobilised to attack the school which was resisted by a combined team of army and police personnel drafted to the area.

It was also gathered that the security personnel were able to disperse the mob and the situation was also calm as at the time of filing in this report.
The District Head of Funtua, Alhaji Idris Sambo Idris, and some community leaders were seen going round the town urging residents to allow peace to reign as, according to them, government was trying to address the issues.
