CITEC residents recount siege by gunmen targeting ex-banker

Some residents of CITEC Estate located in Gwarinpa Abuja, have continued to recount their ordeal, when some gunmen laid siege to the area, last December, reportedly in pursuit of an ex-banker believed to have fled the country.

Speaking to Blueprint some residents of the estate said trouble started shortly after 11pm on the fateful day, December 21, 2019, when two SUVs drove up to their gate and ordered the security man at gunpoint to open the gate into the compound housing eight flats.

“How can I forget that day,” a lady who identified herself simply as Uzo, asked, adding that it was as if she was watching a movie when she heard a bang on her door.

“I was already asleep when I jumped up from the deafening bang on my door. ‘Open up or die.’ I just couldn’t think straight as I made to hide in the wardrobe when the heavy bang happened again with the menacing threat. I immediately flew from my bedroom to open the door,” she recalled.

Another resident who refused to give his name said he had already secured another accommodation as he still can’t sleep well after the incident.

“How can I carry another person’s cross that is not even a tenant in the compound,” he asked.

He said, “All I remember is this people shouting:  ‘where is that stupid banker. Where is he? He will die today.”

The residents said it was weeks later that they learnt that the gunmen were after one  Mr Gabriel Obasuyi, who ran into trouble sometime in 2017 as a Fraud Officer with one of the new generation banks.

Asked where Obasuyi was, one of the respondents, who asked not to be named for fear of his life, hinted that the ex-banker and his family may have fled the country.

When contacted on the development, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Anjuguri Manza, said the matter was under investigation, and assured that the police were committed to the security of lives and property in the territory
