A delegate representing civil society group at the ongoing National Conference, Jaye Gaskia has said that his group and Labour delegates will not allow any regional agenda detrimental to the country to succeed, adding that such could be considered only in the interest of the nation.
Comrade Gaskia told Blueprint in an interview that the only group at the conference with pan Nigeria agenda will probably be the civil society group, Labour delegation, the professional group and organised private sector.
“We are very clear about the civil society and we have said it from the beginning. Perhaps, the only groups that have pan Nigeria agenda will probably be the civil society group, Labour delegation, the professional group and organised private sector; these are people who do business across the country so they have a pan Nigeria outlook.
“The regional representatives and the state representatives are the ones really pushing the regional agenda and for us we have said that, yes it is true and important to acknowledge the fact that the structure is not working properly, it is important to acknowledge the fact that our federation is not a perfect federation and we need to improve on it, that in fact it is not working like a federation and we need to make it a federation, it is important to see all of those things and to see how we can improve on all of those structures.
The activist said their role as civil society and Labour delegations is to see to “all of these middle ground that actually stand in the interest of the nation and not in the interest of any one side.
“We want to see this structures working perfectly, we want to see a better constitution for Nigeria and that is why our demand has been social justice. How can we ensure that all the rights guaranteed in our constitution are matched into a single chapter and that they become enforceable? It means that the ordinary citizen can actually take their government up and seeks redress in the court of law.”
