Comrade Isa Aremu of the Nigeria Labour Congress has stated that there was renewed commitment of members of the committee on Civil Society, Labour and Sports to handle the schedules of duty of the committee.
The TUC chieftain and also the deputy chairman of his committee said that the renewed vigour among members of the committee arose from the fact that it was the civil society that began the clamour for the national conference even in the face of stiff opposition by members of the ruling class especially in the military era.
He said his committee should be the driving force to drive the conference saying that his committee would come out with creative ideas that would strengthen the trade union movement, build capacity of civil society, develop sports and empower the youths.
Also the Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Matters, led by Prof Ibrahim Gambari, has been divided into five sub committees namely foreign policy to include Nigeria -centric issues, Africa- centric issues, non alignment and economic policy.
Other issues to be examined under the subcommittee include the status of the foreign affairs, the role of foreign ministry and Nigeria’s diplomatic affairs.
According to Oke, the third subcommittee would cover participation of Nigeria in international affairs like the ECOWAS, AU, United Nations and other related bodies.
In a related development the committee on Land Tenure and National Boundary comprising mainly of tradition rulers but chaired by Gen Abdullahi Mamman stated that traditional rulers who are the custodians of land in their domain would tell the committee what it was in the past, what it ought to be and what has been the practice.
According to the Mamman, this would guide the committee to proffer solutions on what to improve, what to expunge in the land use act which he stated is generally agreed was faulty.
Mamman also indicated the interest of his committee to invite experts like land surveyors and lawyers whose practice relate land issues as wells as the law interpreters like the lawyers and the justices.
He stated that the committee has extended invitation to the former Director Gen of Boundary Commission as well as the current Director General, Dr Mohammed Ahmed to brief it while admitting that Alhajii
Boboi had agreed to grace the committee’s meeting today.
He expressed worry about the implementation of the committees work admitting that several of the recommendations by previous conferences
were far reaching to solve the nation’s problems but for lack of
implementations.
He said his committee would point it out to the authorities as it
would not be good enough to get people out to waste their time in
vain.
