Cleric tasks Muslims on respect for constituted authorities

Muslims have been tasked to respect the teachings of the Al Quran as well as the laws of the land. Speaking, at the NasrulL-Lahi Fathi Society (NASFAT), Utako branch, Ramadhan Lecture on Al Quran and the Rule of Law, the zonal missioner, Sheikh Sharafdeen Aliagan, described the Qur’an as “holy manual” to mankind for his existence in this life and the hereafter. “Al Quran is all about Devine sense and rule of law is a common sense. So, how do you combine the two? For you to reject anything in Al Quran, it is retrogressive.
No common law supersedes the Divine law. He said: “Those calling for an Islamic state in Nigeria are sounding good, but religiously it’s awkward. To call for Nigeria been run with Al Quran Kareem is a right thing at a wrong time. “If you must fight for Al Quran to be used let us start from our family. Why not use the Al Quran in your home first. Ask have I lived by the Al Quran?
“The role of combat jihad is not up to 30 percent. What we need now is intellectual jihad with knowledge. Al Quran has asked us to respect the rule of law. Respect constituted authority.” He, however, stressed that there “is a difference between an Islamic country and Muslim country.” “Islamic country relies on Al Quran as a source of law, but Nigeria is a Muslim nation which uses the common law. “As Muslims we have a problem in Nigeria that we are not an Islamic nation but we must accept it the way Allah has designs it.”
