A Kano-based Islamic scholar, Ustaz Dauda Lokon-Makera, has called on the federal government not to make the mistake of scrapping the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), considering the deplorable condition of high ways across the country.
Speaking to newsmen in Kano yesterday, Lokon-Makera said with the current deplorable condition of roads all over the country, it would be hard for new ones to be constructed easily in the face of the recession rocking the country, affirming that with FERMA taking the gauntlet to repair the most dilapidated ones carnage could be drastically minimised.
He said constructing new roads would gulp stupendous amount of money with the recession holding sway, pointing out that supporting the roads maintenance agency to forge ahead, accidents accentuated by potholes would be avoided.
He said FERMA had made considerable in road in saving the lives of the Nigerians by making some of the dilapidated roads secured, and warned that scrapping the agency would only make matters worse.
