The Bishop, Diocese of Kaduna Anglican Church, Rt. Rev. Timothy Yahaya, has urged Nigerians to rally together to tackle insecurity, noting that “it is a common enemy that should not be politicised, but rather needs to be handled holistically.”
Yahaya said it was a monster that was everywhere and targeting everybody irrespective of religion, status, sex, race, level of education or political affiliation.
Addressing journalists shortly after delivering the Bishop’s Charge (Presidential Address) at the third Session of the 21st Synod of the Diocese of Kaduna Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) on Friday at the Our Saviour’s Anglican Church Kaduna, with the theme: ‘Peace Be Still’, the cleric lamented the “militarisation of Edo state governorship election,” saying that “it is an eyesore in a democracy.”
He said: “Insecurity is all over the place in our state, we need to handle it holistically. There should never be politicisation of insecurity because nobody benefits from it. We must mobilise and fight against the monster. The kidnappers abduct people without looking at your religion, either you are rich or poor, either you are male or female, either you are educated or illiterate.
“Insecurity is enemy of the society and we need to come together and fight the enemy. To overcome insecurity, we need to get the right intelligence, we should not give it colouration as if it benefits some people and the security agencies need to respond to the matter the right way to give confidence to the people. We need to fight insecurity before it consumes all of us because it would not spare anyone.”
On the Edo election, he said, “How many police have been drafted to Edo state for the elections, how many have been drafted to states facing security challenges? When you militarise an election, are you talking of democracy? Once an election is militarised it means the election has been compromised. Who is afraid of electronic voting?”
