Climate change a threat to peace -CITAD

A Non Governmental Organization (NGO) known as ‘Centre for Information Technology And Development (CITAD) has said that climate change poses danger and threat to peace in the world hence the need for people to avoid acts bringing about emergencies in the climate.

Bauchi state program officer of the NGO, Mohammed Chiroma Hassan made the assertion in a press release issued Monday on the occasion of World Peace Day 2019.

“Peace is beyond absence of war or violent conflict but a freedom from disturbance of all forms. Even though government have the sole power to set standards peacefully or forcefully but individuals also have a role to play in making the atmosphere safe and friendly for all.

“In recent time, the world peace faces new danger which is the emergencies in climate; bringing about a big threat to security forces, livelihood and lives globally. This is the reason this years’ international peace day is tagged: “Climate Action for Peace”. He said

According to him, climate change is brought about by both natural and man-made factors, causing negative impact to human lives directly or on the environment globally.

He enumerated some of the causes of climate change to include indiscriminate deforestation, polluting the environment pointing that the effects of climate change include volcano, landslide, erosion, flooding, drought, pests and diseases among others.

“To this end, we at the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) call on  government at all levels to dwell more on bringing out policies and programs that will address these challenges or issues leading to abridging of people’s peaceful living.

“On the other hand, media must uphold the principles of equity, objectivity and fairness when reporting issues in the society, so as to educate people on the dangers and negative consequences of activities that frown at the health status of the environment for peaceful stay,” he pleaded.
