Climate change: Ebonyi to plant over 5m trees

Ebonyi state government Thursday said it would plant over five million trees across the state to confront the adverse effects of climate change.

The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Dave Umahi on Environment, Prince Sunday Ugwuocha, disclosed this to journalists in Abakaliki, during the flag of this year’s  free tree planting.

Ugwuocha noted that the state free tree planting policy has trickled down to the primary schools in the state.

“Tree planting is part of our life style in the ministry of environment but this year alone we want to recreate a kind of pre-consciousness among the people of Ebonyi state, the need for us to confront   the adverse effects of climate change.

“We are looking at planting over five million trees and that is why we have trickled down this exercise to the primary schools. In the primary schools, the pupils have started to plant trees; teachers and other staff are expected to plant trees likewise in the secondary schools. At the local government areas the same thing, at the state levels, all the MDAs and government officials are expected to plant at least 100 trees. these trees must be planted in such a way that they will not have much deficiency from growth”, he said. 

Governor Umahi who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Kelechi Igwe during the flag off, urged the people of the state to plant trees in their localities.

He said every government officials in the state must plant a minimum of 100 trees.

He noted that effort of planting trees is one thing that enhances the beautify of environment.

He expressed dismay that some of the trees planted in previous years were suffering stunted growth.
