Climate change: NESREA to test vehicles for emissions

In order to control emission which experts say contribute to the dreaded climate change and environmental hazards, the National Environmental Standards Regulations and Enforcement Agency (NESREA) would commence enforcement of emission testing of vehicles nationwide, before registration by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Director General of the Agency, Mrs Ngeri Benebo, who disclosed this in Calabar, at the weekend during the 2nd Essential Enforcement Course for NESREA Staff, said the exercise would take place before the end of the year, and that Agency had also developed 28 National Environmental

Regulations which were being enforced in natural environments across the country.
Benebo, who was represented by the Director, Inspections and Enforcement Department, Mrs. Miranda Annacheree, said “it is heartwarming that just two weeks ago, the Lagos state government organised a roundtable to adopt the federal regulations evolved by NESREA as law for the state.”

She said the training titled “Essentials of Enforcement Course” was to improve participants’ knowledge of environmental protection and practical enforcement issues to enable them understand the standardised procedure for enforcement and also to appreciate the application of laws, regulations, guidelines aimed at discouraging violations

She said:“This training has been made mandatory for all Senior Officers Cadres of the Agency because, we must educate one another, look at how our environment runs, and be environment vanguard. Everybody has a stake in ensuring that our environment is clean and healthy for all of us.”
The director-general added charged environmental experts, particularly NESREA staff, to be equipped with knowledge of global concerns and environmental challenges expressed in various Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAS).

Cross River state Coordinator of the Agency, Raph Nnam, commended the NESREA boss for the training and expressed the hope that the staff would put the training into use and enhanced their performance on the field.
