Committee recommends tenure basis for sport commission DG

The National Conference committee on Civil Society, Labour, Youth and Sports headed by Mrs. Bola Ogunrinade and deputized by Comrade Issa Aremu, has recommended that the position of Director-General for the National Sport Commission (NSC) should be tenured and should be appointed outside the civil service.
The committee also resolved that NSC should have 9 external members  with the Minister in charge of sport as the 10th member and chairman of the commission.
Presenting the reports and recommendations to the plenary yesterday, Mrs. Ogunrinde added that her committee agreed that all sports federations should be based in Abuja for effective coordination, monitoring and efficiency.
The committee also said that the law backing the establishment and operations of the National Sport Commission should incorporate all these recommendations before being passed into law by the National Assembly.
The committee said a befitting, competent, willing and well compensated leadership should be consolidated across the over 44 sporting federation.
In addition, the committee advocated for adequate and prompt funding of all sports.
“Sports should be inclusive of all Nigerians, irrespective of gender, age, religion, tribe, ability or disability.
“Specialisation should be encouraged based on natural resources and physical features, for example, swimming at the riverine areas and polo in the north and other areas where there are established cultural festivals in wrestling, boxing, fishing and boat regatta among others,” the committee recommended.
