Communal clash consumes 10 in Anambra

About 10 persons have been killed with several others injured as Omor and Anaku communities in Ayamelum Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State, renewed their old war over disputed landed property.

Sources told Blueprint that the crisis which resumed on Monday had forced many residents of the troubled communities to quickly relocate to cities and safe neighbouring communities, leaving behind some aged and sick people without children or wards to die.

Miss Sandra Amuluche, a student from Omor, who was spotted travelling back home, told Blueprint, “My parents instructed me to bring back my grandmother to Onitsha because i learnt that our people in the village have vacated homes leaving her helpless. People are very wicked. How can you leave an aged sick woman at home alone and ran for your safety? Are you the only one that loves life? I want to lift her back to my parents who reside at Onitsha.”

But confirming the war, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said that six persons were killed with some injured.

According to Ikenga, the joint task force team comprising Police and military had been deployed to the area, thereby reinforcing the security of life and properties, as well as enhanced the provision of law and order in the area.

“Preliminary information reveals that the cause of the incident is a protracted existing communal dispute between the two communities, Omor and Anaku in Anyamelum LGA. Police Command is on the manhunt for Mr Nnamdi Maduneke and cohorts, wielding Ak47 rifles in the early hours of yesterday 6/2/2023, according to information received.

“The suspect and his cohorts without any provocation started indiscriminately in Omar Community, Anyamelum LGA and murdered six persons and inflicted serious injuries on two others. Meanwhile, patrols/operations are still ongoing and the situation is being monitored. Further developments shall be communicated, please,” he said.
