Communal disputes: ‘We’re establishing mediation centres in Kano’

Kano state Public Defenders Office(PDO), a non-governmental organisation, has expressed its determination to establish mediation centres for communal disputes to be amicably settled without resorting to court  for legal redress.

Speaking to newsmen at a one-day sensitisation forum in Kano yesterday, the administration officer, Kano state Public Defenders Office, Mrs. Rotkang Kyunni, said the establishment of the centres had become” imperative considering the pace with which communal disputes lead to a plethora of court litigations.”

She said: “We are here to sensitise the public on the need to comprehend our mission. The essence of offering free legal services was to bring the down trodden masses close to the corridors of justice in cases where they cannot afford to engage the services of lawyers. We are out to stand on their behalf in any legal circumstances.

“We have already established 12 mediation centres cutting across some notable local government areas and we are willing to establish many in all the 44 local government Areas. Communal disputes could be amicably settled through the adoption of far-reaching conflict resolutions.”

Continuing, she said: “In a situation where one feel oppressed or unjustifiably persecuted, one should feel free to engage our services for his predicament to be Emilio rated  .we are at your service and do not hesitate to call us whenever such a need arises.”

Kyunni said cases of gross human rights violations were prevalent everywhere and that the prompt intervention of the Public Defenders’ Office had become imperative for intractable disputes to be settled.
