Concerns as APC shuts down Abuja Sports complex for Convention

There is growing concerns in the Nation’s capital following the decision of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to take over every space within the only standard sporting complex popularly known as Old Parade Ground located around Area 10 in Abuja.

Blueprint Weekend sports crew gathered that, ahead of the planned convention of the party scheduled for Saturday, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Musa Bello, had ordered both the Secretary Social Development Secretariat and Sports Council to ensure that everyone making use of any office vacates it.

The sporting complex houses all available sports facilities including ‘abandoned’ football pitch, tennis court, indoor halls, among others.

Few months back, the same FCT Minister ordered officials of Abuja Environmental Agency to dump seized cows on the Old Parade Ground’s football stadium. The cows were, however, evacuated after weeks, only when FCT Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria raised alarm.

This same sporting facility has been on dilapidated state without receiving any form of attention from the Federal Capital Territory Administration.

Only two weeks ago, officials of FCT Football Association toured various soccer pitches located around the various six council areas and discovered that no meaningful progress has been made since construction kick-started. In fact, some of the pitches have been turned to farmland.
