An Islamic group, Shafaudeen in Islam Worldwide, yesterday advised the federal government to make the country’s unity the major focus of the planned confab.
The organisation, in a communiqué issued after its 2014 Ishrat and 1st Grand Executive Council meeting in Ibadan, said the national confab, if properly handled, had the potential of addressing most of the current vital national issues and challenges.
Specifically, the body maintained that issues relating to secession should not be allowed in the confab, saying that “secession or division can only engender an intractable regional war situation.”
Shafaudeen in Islam Worldwide in the communiqué jointly signed by its chairman, Prof. Sabit Ariyo Olagoke, and Secretary, Engr B. S. Aderinto, asked the federal government to “take cognisance of representation and agenda that would engender a strong and united Nigeria in constituting the confab.”
The body urged patriotic Nigerians to give full support to the confab to ensure the stability of the country.
Also, Shafaudeen in Islam Worldwide in the communiqué frowned upon the level of corruption in the country, “especially its prevalence in the public and private sectors of our economy.”
It advised Nigerians holding public offices not to always see it as an opportunity to satisfy their whims and caprices, but to serve their fatherland and live a good posterity.
On the governorship elections coming up in Ekiti and Osun states, this year, the group urged stakeholders to play the game with maturity, and advised that federal government, albeit INEC, to put in place “adequate and appropriate machinery towards ensuring successful, free, fair and credible elections.”
It further condemned the insecurity in most parts of the country as shown in the recent murder of the Deputy Editor of Saturday Newswatch, Mr. Toyin Obadina, by hoodlums, threat letters to students in a college of education in Adamawa state by Boko Haram and kidnapping.
