Confusion in Ilorin as ‘mad man’ walks into bank, packs monies on counter

There was palpable tension at Tanke Junction Area of Ilorin, the Kwara state capital Tuesday following a report that armed robbers had invaded one of the new generation banks in the area.

It was learnt that some bandits had stormed the popular financial institution and carted away money.

The incident led to commotion as shop owners around the vicinity of the bank hurriedly locked up their shops and fled while the area was immediately deserted.

But the state police command dispelled as rumour the report that armed bandits invaded a commercial bank at Tanke Junction Area.

Describing the report as unfounded, the police noted that the news about the robbery scare caused panic and agitation among the people.

The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi, in a statement, clarified that “a man strayed into the bank and started packing monies on the bank counter, resulting in commotion in the banking hall.”

He said the suspect was promptly arrested and whisked away and it was discovered that he was of unsound mind upon police preliminary investigation.

Okasanmi stated that the state Commissioner of Police, Ag. Cp Kayode Egbetokun, had ordered aggressive patrols within the Ilorin metropolis to instill confidence on members of the public and banks.

“The Kwara State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of the unfounded news going round that armed robbers invaded a bank in Tanke area of ilorin this morning, this has brought about some level of panic and agitation in the people.

“The Command wishes to state that, what actually transpired was that, a man strayed into the said Bank, and started packing monies on the bank Counter which eventually led to commotion in the banking hall.

“Policemen came in and arrested the suspect, who was promptly taken away, preliminary investigation however revealed that the suspect is of unsound mind.

“Meanwhile, peace has been restored and aggressive patrols of Ilorin has been ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Ag. Cp Kayode Egbetokun, to further instill confidence on members of the public and especially Banks in the State.

“Finally, members of the public are advised to be conscious of happening around them and report any suspicions movement to the Police, please”, the police said.
