CONMESS: Medical consultants to embark on indefinite strike Nov 30 if…

Consultants at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) Amaku, Awka, have threatened to embark on indefinite strike on November 30 if their salary issues are not resolved by Anambra state government.

The chairman, Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) COOUTH chapter, Dr Chukwudi Okani, disclosed this in a statement issued after the association’s congress in Awka, Wednesday.

The statement, which was signed by the MDCAN COOUTH chairman and secretary, Dr Chukwudi Okani and Prof Obiora Ejiofor, said the consultants had reviewed their working conditions and non-implementation of the Consolidated Medical
Salary Scale (CONMESS) at COOUTH since 2012.

He noted that they viewed with concern the undue delay of the state government in approving and implementing the CONMESS
template agreed at the committee set up by the state governor on July 4, 2019.

He said “MDCAN members have shown maturity and patience for four months in spite of being promised that the issues will be resolved
in one month.

“However, the Congress found it expedient to sheathe its sword as a mark of respect and honour to the governor, whom we know is favourably disposed to alleviating our suffering at COOUTH.

“The congress resolved to embark on an indefinite strike from midnight Nov. 30 without further deliberations, if the government fails to reciprocate the trust and confidence the MDCAN has in her.

“This is if the government delays to sign, implement and commence payment of the agreed salaries before November 30,”  COOUTH chairman said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that MDCAN COOUTH had on Nov 29 issued a seven-day strike notice to the state government over poor conditions of service. (NAN)
