Construction union embarks on strike over Chinese coy’s labour practice

The National Union of Civil Engineering Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers (NUCECFWW) has embarked on a nationwide strike over unfair labour practice by China Zhonghao Nigeria Limited to its workers.
According to the Union, they had to embark on the nationwide strike to drive home their demand for improvement in the company’s relationship with its workers after two weeks’ ultimatum.

The Union lamented poor condition of service, casualisation of staff and poor health and safety standard at work place.
Chairman Kaduna state Council of  NUCECFWW, Comrade Shola Oyelayo, told journalists on Monday in Kaduna that the company violated the labour law of the Union.
“Some of the labour law that the China Zhonghao Nigeria Limited violated included casualization of workers, non-compliance with health and safety standards at work place. Non-implementation of condition of service, non-payment of out of station and transfer allowances and poor industrial relationship practice,” he said.

Comrade Oyelayo lamented that “the Union had series of meeting with the management but failed to resolve their demands. We embarked on indefinite strike after the expiration of 14 days ultimatum notice which the management still failed to recognise.”
The NUCECFWW state chairman further explained that the strike is nationwide and all the gates of the companies would remain closed till further notice.

The Director of China Zhonghao Nigeria Limited, Mr Liu in his response said the company will call for an emergency meeting to address their demands.
