Contractor, 5 others fear dead as building collapse in Anambra

About six persons, including a contractor were feared dead on Wednesday when a-four storey building under construction collapsed at Onitsha, the commercial nerve of Anambra State.

Blueprint learnt that only one person out of the seven victims was rescued alive, while the remaining six were allegedly trapped for about an hour.
Eye witnesses, Agozie Ikpeama and Sunday Okonkwo, alleged that the building located beside Fidelity bank, collapsed around 2pm probably due to use of substandard building materials.

According to them, the building lacked proper chaining of the columns within the pillars, coupled with the tiny rods used in the construction.

Blueprint sources also stated that some of those trapped by the building answered their phone calls when called upon, adding that rescue team had begun digging the debris in search of the victims.
When contacted, the Chairman, Red Cross Society in Anambra State, Prof. Peter Katchy, disclosed that some casualties have been rescued and rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

“One of the persons rescued by Red Cross is at the intensive care at Holy Rosary Hospital Waterside Onitsha, while another is at General Hospital Onitsha. Four are still trapped under the debris of the collapsed building including the Site Engineer. The Excavator and an Earth Moving Vehicle have just arrived now,” he said.
