Cop, civilian killed at Onitsha, Ozubulu church records low turnout

Th e recently attacked St. Phillip’s Catholic Church in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo local government area of Anambra state, was yesterday brought to live as the alleged drug baron, High Chief Aloysius Ikegwuonu, the Secretary to Anambra State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, and others attended the early morning Mass.

Th e church which was sealed immediately after the massacre of 13 persons on Sunday, last week, witnessed scanty crowd during the 6.30 am Mass. Although the alleged drug baron, Ikegwuonu refused to speak, the Parish Priest, who escaped the Sunday mayhem by the whiskers, Rev. Fr. Jude Onwuaso, charged parishioners not to fear as God was on His throne, and that those massacred were already on the right hand of the Almighty.

Also speaking, the Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev. Hilary Odili Okeke, noted that God would never forsake His people. Meanwhile, two gunmen yesterday killed a policeman and made away with his rifl e at Onitsha. Blueprint learnt that the hoodlums, who unleashed the terror beside Assemblies of God Church located on Oguta Road, Onitsha, further killed two other persons, motorcycle rider (Okada man) and his passenger, while escaping.

However, Anambra state Police Commissioner, Mr. Garba Baba Umar, while confi rming the incident, disclosed that only a policeman and one other person were killed, while the third person was seriously injured. Umar, while describing the gunmen as “criminals,” refuted the claims that the incident occurred in the church, assuring that his men were working around the clock to bring the criminals to book.
