Corruption responsible for high poverty level – CATNA

A group, under the aegis of Concerned Association for Transparency and National Advancement (CATNA), has said that poverty is the resultant effect of corruption in the country.
In a press statement signed by Tukur Idris Aminu yesterday in Abuja, the organisation said poverty is the most devastative disease that is ravaging every part of the county irrespective of gender, religious, ethnicity, languages or educational status.
While calling on all and sundry to support the present administration in the fight against corruption, he noted that poverty is a disease that is only curable through eradication of corruption.
He reiterated that Nigeria will not be able to generate sufficient income to feed its populace if corruption is allowed to thrive.
The group further noted that half of the estimated 180 million population of the country live in the rural areas with subsistence agriculture as a major source of income.
The statement said that corruption has hindered the introduction of relevant modern technology in agriculture leading to untold negative impact on farm yields leaving the rural dweller pauperised.
The urged all Nigerians to key into President Muhammadu Buhari’s fight against corruption to make the resources of the state accessible to all.
“As long as there is corruption, we can never be able to generate sufficient income to combat the absolute lack of materials, thus acute poverty.
“Poverty is a disease curable only by eradication of corruption in order to have access to income sufficient to combat the plague.
“The afflicted eat not what they want but what they can get.
“The resources meant for educational sector is being mismanaged or stolen, hence the monetisation of educational services, this made children from economically vulnerable homes to drop out of school leading to increase in illiteracy, disease, unhealthy socio cultural practices, environmental degradation and increase in crimes,” he said.
