Count your blessings at all times, Onaiyekan tasks Christians

Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has tasked Christians to count their blessings in all situations in order to appreciate God’s goodness and enjoy God’s blessings.
Onaiyekan gave the charge yesterday, in a Homily during the Holy Mass to mark the 2018 Cathedraticum celebration for Karu Deanery, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Kpeyegyi.
According to him, there is nobody who God has not been good to, however, if anyone complains that his is not enough he makes himself incapable of enjoying blessing he has received.
The cleric said such people could incur the wrath of God as experienced by the children of Israel in the wilderness, when they became impatient and spoke against God and Moses, pointing out that “as is characteristic of God’s relationship with His people, He forgave them and they learnt their lesson.”
He said: “We too need to learn this lesson. We too, often complain against God. Even our prayers are very often complaints. To some people prayer is all about railing out a list of needs and we forget about the many things God has done.
“If we just take our time to count our blessings, we discover that if we are patient we will see God’s goodness in our lives. It is a constant lesson we have to learn because this attitude of impatience with God goes from the rich to the poor.”
He decried the fact that Christians often want things to go according to their plans and forget to look at how God has planned them, just as he urged the faithful not complain, but to raise their eyes to God in all situations.
The cleric, who explained that the Cathedraticum “is a sign of unity of the local church around the bishop and can only be convened by the bishop,” expressed appreciation of the clergy in the archdioceses to the congregations for their support.
High point of the celebration was the presentation of gifts from all the parishes in the Deanery to the Archbishop and his Auxiliary, Rev. Dr. Anslem Umoren.
