Couple burns 7-year-old girl’s body over allegation of witch craft

A 57-year-old man, Joseph Akporugo and his wife, Janet have been arrested by men of the Ogun state police command for allegedly maltreating and inflicting wounds on a seven-year-old girl (name withheld).

The girl, according to a statement by the command’s spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi in Abeokuta on Wednesday, disclosed that the girl who is the granddaughter of the man had been staying with the couple since the death of her biological father.

The girl walked into the house of a police constable living closed to their house in Awa-Ijebu and reported to him about the abuse and the ill treatment melted out to her by her grandfather and his wife.

She narrated how the couple put rubber on fire and used it to burn her body on allegation that she is a witch and that she used her witchcraft to kill her biological father.

The constable brought her to Awa-Ijebu police station where the case was officially reported.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the division, Adewalehinmi subsequently detailed detectives to the couple’s house and they were promptly arrested.

On interrogation, the couple was unable to give any reason for maltreatment the little girl.

The Commissioner of police, Kenneth Ebrimson has ordered a proper investigation of the case with the view to diligently prosecute the suspects.
