Court declares council chairmen elected during Okorocha illegal

Imo State High Court Friday declared the election of 27 Local Government chairmen conducted by the former governor of the state, Owelle Rochas Okorocha on the 25th day of August 2018, six months before the expiration of his tenure as null and void and of no effect.

The court in a judgment delivered in Owerri by Justice E. F. Njemanze, ordered that all the former chairmen to return to the state government, and all salaries and allowances paid to them.

Innocent Mmezi and others had brought an action against the state government, the State Electoral Commission and the 27 LGA chairmen purportedly elected under Rochas Okorocha.

Recall that the said election was conducted in more than 600 Community Government Councils created by Okorocha which produced more than the approved 304 counsellors approved by INEC wards.

However, the said chairmen had claimed they got judgement from  the Federal Appeal Court against their dissolution and had concluded plans to take over the councils on Monday next week.
