Magistrate, (Mrs) Florence Aghedo of Egor Magistrate court in Edo state has convicted a couple, Monday Johnson and Patience Johnson for assaulting one Mrs. Hope Ughabugo and her daughter.

The husband and wife were convicted after the presiding Magistrate found them guilty of one, out of the two-count charges filed against them by the police prosecutor, Sgt. Daniel  Ifidon, and accordingly sentenced them to three months in imprisonment.

Magistrate Aghedo however, gave the convict an option of  fine of N5,000 each, and also ordered them (defendants) to  pay N10,000 to Mrs. Ughabugo as compensation.

Police prosecutor, Sgt. Daniel Ifidon, had told the court that Patience unlawfully assaulted the complainant, Ughabugo by using her fist blow on her stomach on  August 20, 2019 at Benin technical road, Benin in Egor magisterial district.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provision of sections 516 and 351 of the Criminal Code Cap. 48 Vol. 11, Laws of the defunct Bendel state of Nigeria, 1976, now applicable in Edo.

According the prosecutor, “Ughabugo and her Mother, Mrs Omogbai had entered a Keke’Na’Pep at Benin Technical Junction, while Patience forcefully tried to dragged Ughabugo  out of the Keke, alleging that she came first.

“When Patience husband’s Johnson noticed the action of his wife and another woman, he parked his car, without asking question and joined his wife and  assaulted Ughabugo’s mother by slapping her on her face.

“Mr Johnson later took his wife away on his car. it was from licensing office  that he was traced to his place of work at Psychiatric Hospital in Benin, where he was arrested.”
