Court jails security guard 3 months for negligence

A Grade 1 Area Court in Kuje yesterday sentenced a 32-year-old security guard, Mohammed Lawal, to three months in prison for negligence.
The Presiding Judge, Mr Nuhu Ibrahim, convicted Lawal after he pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of negligent conduct.
Ibrahim, however, gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N7,000.
The judge also ordered the convict to pay N219,000 as compensation to Mr Mathias Eze, the complainant.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt Niyom Ishaya, had told the court that Eze lodged a report against the convict at the Kuje Police Station on January 20.
He said Lawal neglected his duty post at Fort Royal Estate, Airport Road, which allowed thieves to break into the estate and stole 42 inch plasma TV valued at N100,000, a microwave valued at N19,000 and a power generator.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 196 of the Penal Code.
The convict pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency, saying, “I stole because I needed money to take care of my sick brother who lives in Gwagwalada”.
