Court remands man for alleged phone theft

A Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo, the Osun state capital, on Wednesday, ordered the remand of a 31-year-old man, Isiaka Bakare, for allegedly stealing mobile phone.

The police prosecutor, Mr. Olufemi Olanibi, told the  court that the defendant committed the alleged offence on August 22, 2019, at about 2pm at Osun state University Campus, Oke Baale, Osogbo.

The prosecutor alleged that the defendant stole Samsung Galaxy J7 Handset with IMES NO 351569109199108418 that worth N100,000.

He alleged that a cash sum of N7,000 and Zenith Bank statement of account property of one Elizabeth Modupeola Faniran was found in the possession of the defendant.

According to the charge sheet, the offence contravened the provision of section 516 and 383 and punishable under section 390 Cap 34, vol ll of the law of Osun State,  2002.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the two count charges of stealing and abetting leveled against him by the police.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr Okobe Nagite, prayed the court to grant his client bail in a liberal term.

The prosecutor opposed the bail, saying that the defendant was tracked to Lagos state and if granted bail the effort of the police will be jeopardized.

The Magistrate, Mrs Risikat Olayemi, ordered the remand of the defendant in Ilesa Correctional center for further investigation of the police.

She directed the counsel to file formal application for the bail and adjourned the case to January 30, 2020 for mention.
