COVID-19: 6 die in Ebonyi, Umahi stable

The deputy governor of Ebonyi state, Kelechi Igwe, Tuesday said his boss, David Umahi’s health remains stable, adding that the governor was still asymptomatic to coronavirus.

Mr. Igwe stated this during an interactive meeting with members of the state anti-coronavirus pandemic at Old Government House, Abakaliki, where he was  briefed by the commissioner on the situation of things regarding the virus in the state.

He stated that the governor has not shown any sign or symptoms of the virus and that he has directed the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) to direct all the MDAs in the state to commence  one hour prayer daily for all the people that have tested positive to the virus.

“We are all aware that a couple of days ago, the chairman of the campaign against COVID-19 prevention and escalation in Ebonyi state together with other aides of his were infected but up till this moment, he has not shown any sign of that infection and he is still very strong. He has been doing his official duties even in isolation which shows the level of passion he has for us and this state.

“Yesterday, he directed the SSG to inform all the MDAs to commence with effect from today, one hour prayer for the state, for the nation, for our dear governor and all the persons that have tested positive for coronavirus in Ebonyi state.

“For us at the state level, I want to say on behalf of the committee that the commissioner for health and the CMD FETHA and the permanent secretary, Ministry of Health that they must make sure that from today, all our health workers are tested.

“How can you go to give care to a man who is very sick when you are sick? Health workers in some places have tested positive to this coronavirus even in Ebonyi here. So, we must be sure that our health workers are safe before giving them the privilege to go and render care to those who are infected,” he said.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezurike, said six out of the 508 persons in Ebonyi state who tested positive to the coronavirus pandemic have died of the virus.

Umezurike, while briefing the state deputy governor, Dr. Kelechi  stated that out of the 508 who tested positive to the virus, a total of 426 patients have been treated and discharged.

“We have 508 confirmed cases and we have managed and discharged 406 patients. We categorised it according to the NCDC guideline, but the total number managed and discharged is 426 out 508 and we unfortunately lost six cases.

“Right from the beginning, the governor put in a lot of measures to ensure that we don’t have any case, but unfortunately, we had our index case on 26th April. Since then, we have been working tirelessly to ensure we don’t have community transmission but it started happening and that is where we are now,” he said.
