Covid-19: Again, Ogun extends lockdown

Worried by the increasing cases of Coronavirus in Ogun state, Governor Dapo Abiodun, Friday, announced extension of lockdown by one week.

The governor who disclosed this while addressing journalists in his Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta office, expressed worry over the rate at which residents violate compulsory use of nose mask and the social distancing order.

Governor Abiodun who was flanked by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, disclosed that as at Thursday, May 7, the total number of COVID-19 cases recorded in the state was 100, adding that there are two deaths while 78 active cases are still receiving treatment in the various isolation centres in the state.

The governor also issued a stern warning to violators of inter-state travel ban, and insisted that he would not hesitate to deal with anyone found culpable.

He said, “To preserve the lives of our people, we are persuaded to extend the current modified lockdown, which has been slightly eased, for another one week alongside the current guidelines. This will be reviewed, as usual, on a weekly basis.”

“Let me state unequivocally that we will not tolerate any further breach on the ban of inter-State travel. Anybody found culpable will be treated for committing a crime against Ogun State and visited with the full weight of the law.”

“We have also noted the unpatriotic acts of some individuals who try to breach the ban on inter-State travel by smuggling people across the inter-State borders in trucks conveying essential items.”

“As at today, we have screened over 10,000 people and tested over 700. In addition to that, we have intensified our contact tracing capacity and have traced over 551 contacts of the COVID-19 positive patients. We are doing this to detect and treat people who are already infected rather than leaving them undetected which will be more detrimental because this will increase community transmission.”
