Covid-19: EU, British council donate PPE to emirs in Yobe

As part of measures to curb the spread of covi-19, a European Union (EU) funded Managing Conflict in Northeast Nigeria (MCN) programme has donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to 14 emirate councils in Yobe state.

The programme which is implemented by the British Council donated hand washing facilities, hand sanitizers, face masks, disinfectants and
covid-19 education materials.

It also carried sensitisations on the dangers of the pandemic, and the need to take precautionary measures.

The British council state team leader in Yobe state, Abdulkadir Sambo, said, “This is in recognition that the traditional rulers provide one of the essential services that will continue despite stay at home and social distancing regulation.

“The security agencies are overwhelmed by this pandemic, and we have seen significant reduction in court activities.  In this difficult
time, people find it more comforting to patronise the emirates for peace dialogue because of the closure of courts and restricted access to police stations.”

The programme manager, Initiative for Community Development Usman Jalo who distributed the items on behalf of the British council said the gesture was also extended to the family support units situated in some selected Police divisions across the state, as well
as vigilante and hunter groups.

The emir of Fika and Chairman Yobe state Council of Chiefs, Dr. Muhammadu Abali Ibn Moh’d Idrissa, and his Potiskum counter part Alhaji Umaru Bubaram Ibn Wuriwa Bauya thanked the EU and British council for the donations and promised to take them to grassroots.

They also took time to personally demonstrate a simple hand washing procedure and wearing of face mask.
