Ekiti state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has said that the Index Case of COVID-19, recorded in the state has now been tested negative and would very soon be discharged from the hospital.
The index case in Ekiti was a driver who brought a 27- year- old American to the state few weeks ago. He eventually tested positive of coronavirus.
The driver after testing positive to the pandemic has been in isolation centre under intensive medicare , though the 27-year old American he brought later died with inconclusive test , while his female care giver tested negative.
The governor who spoke Tuesday on a TV program, “Your View”, stated that his administration imposed dusk to dawn curfew in the state to combat the spread of the disease. He stated that the curfew is between 7pm- to 7am, with restriction of movement during the rest of the day. People on essential services are, however exempted.
Contrary to some opinions that COVID-19 is a disease of the affluence, the governor stated that it is an equal opportunity disease and cautioned people on the “illusion.”
“Let our people know COVID-19 is an equal opportunity disease, it is not for the big men. The person who tested positive in Ekiti is not a big man. It could happen to anybody. We must not allow that illusion that it is a big -man disease.”
The chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum added that all governors across the federation are doing their best to protect their territories.
“Though I tested negative, I am still in isolation of 14 days, I still have 5 days remaining, so I am at home in Ekiti on restriction, I am in constant communication with my team.
“The Ekiti index case that was positive has now tested negative, and we would soon be discharged.
“The curfew imposed in the state to curb the spread of the deadly disease was backed by executive order; our lawmakers are in COVID-19 recess.
“What we have done is in adherence to Quarantine act of 2020 and in conjunction with 1999 constitution. With executive order, our action is adequate
“The 7pm -7am curfew means no movement, while 7am-7pm, there is restriction of movement except those on essential services.”
The governor added that his administration has been doing all possible best to ensure Ekiti is improved on the health sector.
“For instance, during the time of Lassa fever, despite the fact that the neighbouring state recorded incident, Ekiti has no case of Lassa fever.”
Fayemi appealed to Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to establish health testing facility in the state.
