The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria has called on governments at all levels to emulate Lagos state government in distributing foods and sanitary items to the poor during the lockdown period.
Speaking in a statement on the Coronavirus raging globally, signed by its Secretary General, Nafiu Baba Ahmed, SCSN said all the affected countries across the globe took these measures in spite of their socio-economic standard, which is by far better than Nigeria’s.
According to the Council, “Allah has enjoined the privileged amongst us to cater for the needy.
“Allah said, ‘And spend something (in charity) out of the substance Which We bestowed on you, before death should come to any of you and he should say, ‘O my Lord! Why did Thou not give me respite for a little while? I should then have given (largely) in charity, and i should have been one of the doers of good’.
“We therefore call on the rich amongst us to give out to the needy. This trying time we are facing, is the right opportunity to get tremendous reward from the Almighty, by this
single act of charity. while praying to Allah to relieve the nation of this pandemic and others yet unknown.”
The Shari’ah Council further call on all Muslims to desist from all sorts of sins and turn to Allah for repentance. The Council also advised all Muslims to be law abiding noting that all the steps taken by government to curb the pandemic, are for the betterment of the citizenry.
“Also Muslims should adhere to all the precautionary measures being preached against Covid-19.”
