COVID-19: Youth Parliament urges government to carry young people along

The National Youth Parliament has called on both federal and state governments to co-opt youth in committees on the fight against Covid-19 across the nation.

The call was made by the Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Mubarak Mijinyawa, during a news conference at Gombe state.

Mijinyawa who expressed concerned that many of the Covid-19 positive cases tested are young people, said it become necessary for the youths to lend their voices on the need for government  to carry them along in the fight against  the pandemic.

He said the need to involve the youths was important, so as to sensitise them on the existence of the virus, noting that many youths were distressed, with some even denying its existence.

Citing recent protest in some isolation centres in Nigeria, particularly in Gombe and Oyo states, Mubarak said they have realised that 90 per cent of the infected persons in the isolation wards in Gombe were young people, with no symptoms of Covid-19, which he said was the cause of the protest.

Mr. Mijinyawa further stressed the need for governments, community vanguards and vigilantes to put in more efforts in stopping the interstate movements so as to win the fight against the disease, which is spreading in the country.
