CSO’s charges NASS on Transition Bill

National Assembly has been called upon to consider passing into law, the Presidential Transition Bill that would foster a hitch-free executive transition of power from one democratically elected government to another.

Save Democracy Africa (SDA), a Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) made the call in Abuja during a Civil Society Organisations (CSO’s) consultative forum on executive transition of power.

Chairman of the forum and member of the governing council of SDA Senator Adefemi Kila, the sixth senate member who represented Ekiti central senatorial district, stressed the need for soft landing of outgoing Presidents, saying if the bill scales through it will enhance peace and orderliness in the change of government.

Kila expressed worry that there was no transition process in the country as obtainable in advanced countries except for committees, which were usually temporarily set up for that purpose, noting that ensuring peace was always difficult going by this process.

“It is pertinent to have an institution to encourage smooth and peaceful change in government and for that to happen, certain information, criteria, logistics must be in place both for the incoming and outgoing president. If a president is leaving the lodge, is there provision for him, where will he go next?

“For instance when this government took over power it took six months to have his ministers in place and that is not good. If there is a system which says you have only one month to set up your cabinet and total handover notes many other things will be in place,” he added.
